Why You Shouldn’t Be Afraid to Fail in Business, Creativity, or Life

Have you ever run away from going after a lofty dream or goal for fear of failure? Things like moving to a new city? Quitting your soul sucking job? Starting that creative business you keep dreaming of? Or what about sharing your art in public?

I know this feeling very well. I just failed massively in business. I attempted my first creative workshop and only one person showed up. I felt like a total loser, a fraud, a complete failure!

But here is the truth, our output, our results, our work IS NOT who we are. We are not our work! Wanna know what else? Failure is part of the growth process.

You have to be willing to fail and try again to move to the next level of your expansion. This resilience is required as you expand your comfort zone.

And, want to know what has prepared me for this level of failure? My creative practice . Showing up to create and failing regularly for 8+ years has taught me a few things …

  1. Focus on the process over the results. Focusing on the creative process will allow you to experience more joy instead of getting caught up in your head.

  2. Study why something didn’t work. Review your process and look for areas of opportunity. What would you do differently next time?

  3. Reflect. Pick up your journal or open your notes app and document your feelings and thoughts. What would you like to remember about this moment?

I hope these tips support you as you navigate your creative journey. Let’s normalize feeling insecure and afraid and still moving forward with our big dreams and goals.

Let’s practice detaching from the results and enjoying each moment
